{"id":20544,"date":"2014-04-03T01:50:05","date_gmt":"2014-04-03T08:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/?p=20544"},"modified":"2014-04-03T01:50:05","modified_gmt":"2014-04-03T08:50:05","slug":"sound-stage-with-mara-hruby-mic-holden-mickey-taelor-and-j-louis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/?p=20544","title":{"rendered":"SOUND STAGE with Mara Hruby, Mic Holden, Mickey Taelor, and J-Louis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dX0OrN4IgZM?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Zanzibar in Santa Monica became host to LA locals, artists and music purveyors alike for the release of Archaic Rapture, the newest EP from vocalist Mara Hruby, and a headlining performance by the songstress herself.<br \/>\nIllsociety Magazine, Project Live LA, and Nu-Soul Magazine came together to produce the Soundstage event.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe night was filled with sounds from various DJs \u2013 Spill, Mantron and Destroyer \u2013 spinning the likes of Jhene Aiko, The Weeknd, and ScHoolboy Q with a mixture of future bass, r&#038;b, reggae and hip-hop. Attentive bartenders kept glasses full while <A href=\"http:\/\/h20sports.bandcamp.com\/\">H20$$$SPORTS$$$<\/a> came through for a special beat set, but had some technical difficulties so unfortunately had too cut their set short. <\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Illsocietymag.com-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Illsocietymag.com-3.jpg\" alt=\"Illsocietymag.com-3\" width=\"625\" height=\"425\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20548\" srcset=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Illsocietymag.com-3.jpg 625w, http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Illsocietymag.com-3-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/center>    <\/p>\n<p>\tThe first live performance came from <a href=\"http:\/\/mickeytaelor.bandcamp.com\/\">Mickey Taelor<\/a>, a charismatic young artist. Her sultry vocal style is infused with a jazz-like scat while her stage presence is fun and laidback. Her set included tracks off past EPs Half Baked and Welcome to Hiigrade Vol. 1, and an energetic cover to Lil Wayne\u2019s \u201cHYFR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/I-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/I-6.jpg\" alt=\"I-6\" width=\"625\" height=\"425\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20546\" srcset=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/I-6.jpg 625w, http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/I-6-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>\tNext came <a href=\"http:\/\/micholden.bandcamp.com\/\">Mic Holden<\/a>, a musician and emcee from Inglewood, CA. After performing original work and a few A Tribe Called Quest covers, the multi-talented artist switched gears to jam out on percussion with his drummer Jake Jamison and bassist Charlie Domingo.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/lllsocietymag.com-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/lllsocietymag.com-3.jpg\" alt=\"lllsocietymag.com-3\" width=\"625\" height=\"425\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20549\" srcset=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/lllsocietymag.com-3.jpg 625w, http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/lllsocietymag.com-3-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/thisjaylouis\">J-Louis<\/a> of Soulection made a special appearance and played us some really cool tunes including his well known remix, All About the Panties (That Mara Hruby Flow).        <\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Illsocietymag.com-20.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Illsocietymag.com-20.jpg\" alt=\"Illsocietymag.com-20\" width=\"625\" height=\"425\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20550\" srcset=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Illsocietymag.com-20.jpg 625w, http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Illsocietymag.com-20-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/center>\t<\/p>\n<p>Finally, at a quarter to midnight, <a href=\"http:\/\/illsocietymag.com\/?p=20361\">Mara Hruby<\/a> arrived. She sparkled on stage in a black and gold embellished number as she powered through her set filled with treasured tunes both old and new. Hruby closed her eyes and grooved with her band in between songs from Archaic Rapture and her previous project From Her Eyes. She belted tales of heartbreak with true pain and delivered her flirtier work with just a hint of sex appeal. <\/p>\n<p>         After the show, Hruby chatted and took pictures with fans as they snagged copies of From Her Eyes along with bracelets and a strawberry, rhubarb and mango jam made by the artist herself. The one-on-one time with Hruby added a personal touch to an already intimate evening in the small, but spacious venue.
