In “Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight”, Travis Scott not only delivers his unique street anthems by the bunches, such as “way back” and “through the late night”, but he switches up his style to implement more alternative RnB trap sounds filled with emotion on the second half of the album.

With songs like “goosebumps” “first take” and “wonderful”, and features by some of the most notable alternative RnB artists of today (Bryson Tiller and The Weeknd), Travis makes an album that is both appealing to men and women alike. He encourages the savage lifestyle (shout to that 21 Savage feature on “Outside”), while showing that it is okay to lust for and romance the ladies. He showcases his ability to create compelling cinematic tracks, a comfortability in experimenting with his sound, and his ability to display an array of emotions throughout the album.

I was intrigued by the album name and the cover art, so I decided to look into it. In an interview with Billboard, Travis Scott explains the album title:

“I just felt like I was confined in a box. I couldn’t do s–t I wanted to do to help forward pop culture and music. It’s like motherf–kers still tryna hold me back so that was the whole gist of it. “In the trap” has nothing to do with coke or anything. It’s literally a trap.”

So we now know why the caged bird sings. Travis Scott sings about fame, glory, love, and lust – about the benefits and spoils that come with a life of fame and being an industry artist. He sings about his desire to rise above the expectations of pop culture and music, to break barriers and to change the game, and I think with this album, Travis Scott has definitely freed himself from that cage and propelled the trap game into a whole new direction.

Listen to the tape here.

– Caroline Cardenas

As soon as Travis Scott dropped the art for his new album “Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight”, my anticipation went through the roof.
