I did some research and discovered the Australian artist Kyle Hughes-Odgers, who also operates on the street under the handle \u2018creepy\u2019, who was kind enough to let me interview him through email.<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>Alexis W: Basics first! Name, location, and favorite time of day.<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>Kyle Hughes-Odgers: Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Perth Western Australia. Midnight.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: How would you describe your work to someone?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: Narrative based patterned folk art.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: Where does the name creepy come from?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: Early on when I started doing street work, I liked the idea of having\u00a0a word that was the opposite of my work. Contrast.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: I discovered your work after encountering a beautiful piece in\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Venice Beach, in the parking lot across from James Beach on North Venice blvd. There are few more of your pieces in Venice Beach as well \u2013 what is the story behind these? What was your experience like in Los Angeles?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: I headed over to L.A in August 2011 for the \u201cstreet art saved my\u00a0life: 39 new york stories\u201d group exhibition curated by Brooklyn Street\u00a0Art at C.A.V.E gallery. While I was in town I got to paint some walls\u00a0in conjunction with the show. The carpark wall being the largest. I\u00a0had a great time in L.A although I quickly learnt that I couldn\u2019t just\u00a0walk everywhere like I thought I could.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: From what I have seen, Australia seems to have a really unique graffiti culture, and we are so lucky here to be exposed to it online and through a strong presence of Australian graffiti artists in Los\u00a0Angeles. What is the graffiti and street art culture like in Australia? Did you find that your experience painting, that people are more receptive and accepting to public art in Australia?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: Graffiti and street art in Australia is really progressive. There are\u00a0a lot of amazing artists that are doing really interesting things at\u00a0the moment and it\u2019s great that the rest of the world is starting to be\u00a0exposed to the amount of talent here. I don\u2019t think people are anymore\u00a0or any less receptive to public art in Australia compared to anywhere\u00a0else.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: Does folklore and textiles play a role in your work?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: Definitely- I base all of my work on narrative, it might be a story I\u00a0have heard, experienced or been inspired by. I also have a huge\u00a0interest in pattern making, textiles and visual repetitive sequences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: I absolutely love all the patterns, where do these come from?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: Keeping my eyes open, looking for patterns and visual sequences in the\u00a0environment or city I am in, taking lots of photos of textures and\u00a0unusual shapes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: What inspires you about the street?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: Texture, scale and problem solving.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: Do you find your narrative or intention changes from large\u00a0<\/strong><strong>public works to smaller scale\/gallery pieces?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: Not at all \u2013 I think complex or simple ideas can work on any scale.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW:There often seems to be a very delicate balancing act going on in a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>lot of your pieces with ladders, chairs, pulleys, even houses!<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: Yeah, I\u2019ve been working on these ideas for awhile &#8211; The characters in\u00a0the stories aren\u2019t equipped and don&#8217;t have the skills to change the\u00a0situations and environments they are in. So the solutions they create\u00a0are fragile and temporary, everything could go horribly wrong at any\u00a0moment. It\u2019s more about the will to keep going. I guess it\u2019s my way of\u00a0showing that existence is very fragile and everyone does what they\u00a0need to do to survive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: Tell me about different walls in different cities around the\u00a0world that you have encountered.<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: I love traveling, checking out new cities and meeting new people. Some\u00a0of my favorites have been rooftops in NYC. Painting in the snow in\u00a0Berlin, getting to see amazing abandoned houses in Paris\u2026anywhere in\u00a0Europe actually. Painting in Australia is always good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>AW: Current projects? Upcoming adventures? What\u2019s next for you?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><em>KHO: I\u2019ve been working on a 50m laneway in Perth Australia, that will have\u00a07 large lenticular prints installed into the final painting so that\u00a0sections of pattern are animated. I\u2019ll be heading up the North West to\u00a0paint some big walls in the desert in July and have also painted a\u00a0children\u2019s book, which will be out in September through Fremantle arts\u00a0press. Plus a few other projects that are in the early stages.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#ff0000;\"><strong>We look forward to seeing more work from Kyle!
