Spiritually inclined rap? These words seldom share the same sentence, but with J. Nolan, a 23 years young hip-hop artist from Connecticut- the dichotomy of higher-power influenced rap is what makes him stand out from the crowd. J. Nolan, the first representative of The Manifest Movement, a collective group of young individuals committed to contributing change in the form of music, spiritual growth, and community enrichment, has created an artistry platform for himself that’s been co-signed from the likes of 9th Wonder and Don Cannon. J. Nolan’s most recent song “Blue Skies” sparked my interest, with the excellent production of Tuelv laced with the lyrical quality of J. Nolan, I couldn’t help but appreciate the reality of the words he conveyed:
“Only thing on my mind
Be a soldier for God
Until I’m in the blue skies
It’s gonna be a long ride,
So I’m taking my time,
I’ll be going for mine, ‘til I’m in the blue skies”
“Redefining myself, through the heartache,
Hard days, trying to congregate with like minds, just like mine…”
“Blue Skies” is the second release of J. Nolan’s #DistinguishYourself Campaign, with the first track, “All I GOT” creating a similar atmosphere which celebrates the excellence of character. The #DistinguishYourself Music Series serves as a campaign leading to the release of the artist’s “Distinction” album, set for release in Spring ’13.
Inspired by the likes of Lupe Fiasco, J. Nolan creates a storyline of a young man that’s chasing the dream of being a respected artist in the industry. The great energy on the record is definitely something to bump to when you need lively flows to inspire you to hustle towards greatness.
