“Sounds Like… is a series of mini-documentaries showcasing a group of forward-thinking artists (Bootsy Collins, Tim Exile, TOKiMONSTA, BADBADNOTGOOD & Elektro Guzzi) and their unique approaches to music creation and production”.
Inspiration reveals itself in unexpected places – and the process is not without its challenges. Set in Toronto, London, LA, Cincinnati and Vienna, this new four part web documentary series called Sounds Like… explores the process of capturing or re-examining one’s musical goals, whether in a home studio, high-end recording studio, practice room or on stage.
Red Bull Music Academy has been taking its kaleidoscopic series of music workshops and festivals around the world for the last 15 years. AKG, known for its high-end microphone and headphone technology and design, is one of the long time partners that have been supporting the Academy with equipment since day one. In this series of clips, Red Bull Music Academy and AKG teamed up to shine a light on a handful of forward-looking producers and bands, who demonstrate how they delineate their own sound.
In Sounds Like… we sit down for a cup of tea with Tim Exile’s mum, and see him exchanging riffs with Imogen Heap; go for a road trip to Bootsy Collins’s studio with BADBADNOTGOOD, who break down their up-front working method – which they describe as making noise until it becomes organized. TOKiMONSTA, in a clip that is also a paean of sorts to LA, shows how she organically explores both analogue and digital sound sources, and the equally down-home methods she uses to expand ideas with collaborators. Elektro Guzzi bring a dexterous musicianship to their live techno sound, and reflect on the process of translating that energy when in the studio. Sounds Like… is both a series of artist portraits and a heartfelt tribute to the craft of music making.
