Urban Underground. It’s a staple of hip hop in the wilderness of the Los Angeles night. It’s a showcase for the aspiring. It’s a platform for emcees with the audacity to put their money where their mouth is and hu$tle tickets, create an audience for themselves and pay dues. It’s a place to sharpen your skills on the mic and your stage presence. And it’s also been a stronghold for legends in the game who have stayed true to the culture and always represented their own independent brand of Hip Hop.
Twice a month, JiJi & DJ Leviathon breathe life into the underground at the Airliner with the help of their resident hosts like MC Ducer (Project Blow’d) and DJ Lu Man (Break Beats & Rhymes Radio).
Friday January 10th was no different as Guilty Simpson and Apollo Brown, collectively known as “Dice Game”, crashed the upstairs stage with a barrage of double barrel sure shots that moved the crowd like stray bullets.
Percee P was in the building moving units. MC Marlon D rocked both the outside and downstairs stages with the helps of DJ Kodak and a live saxophone player. Aspect One murdered the cypher in a free for all rumble when the microphone went up for grabs amongst a circle of tyrants. L. Scatterbrain was in the house representing the mighty Zulu Nation. Vizion was there putting it down for the IE. D. Braxx was reporting live from the field for The Rap Project. (www.therapprojectshow.com)
Shi Dogg was demonstrating his technique in a private exhibition with his extended family from the D. DJ House Shoes could be found lamping in the cut on the balcony outside, and Agallah the Don was there promoting his new collaborative mixture, “Agallah X Alchemist: The Past And The Present.” Make sure you go and download that for free at www.audiomack.com.
And of course Apollo Brown and Guilty Simpson escaped the snow in Detroit to come tear the roof off the motherfucker in the land of warm winter days in Southern California.
Keith Murray and Craig G are headlining the next two Urban Underground events at the Airliner, so if you truly love hip hop and can appreciate the art behind crafting an artist’s abilities in a live arena, make sure you go out and support the culture.
You know ya man’s Drop Jewelz.
