Artist: Will Hill
Album: IDLE
Released: June 3, 2014
The first half of Will Hill’s “IDLE” is essentially about a girl – wanting a girl, getting a girl, smoking with a girl. It relies on melodic hooks and electronic production – see Daft Punk’s “Something About Us” sample on the Angel M produced “Sim Simma.” IDLE is Hill’s follow-up to his 2013 project Ramadan and tells the story of a time when he was more concerned with the well-being of a significant other than himself. The result isn’t mopey. It’s fun and relatable.
The album takes an introspective turn on “Babble On” as Hill reaches for deeper lyrics on top of harder-hitting beats and incorporates voice mails and personal recordings as interludes. The ATL rapper pulls from G-Funk and his own southern influence for the album’s smooth bangers “OG” and “Flight to LA,” both produced by Matthausbeatz. With IDLE, Will Hill delivers a smart, soulful soundtrack just in time for summer.
