August 9th marked a day in history heard around the world when 18 year old Mike Brown was gunned down by a police officer during the day time in the middle of the street in Ferguson St. Louis. When the initial story broke, the Ferguson police Department told the media that Mike Brown was shot entering an altercation between himself and police officer Darren Wilson. The initial report was that when Brown attacked officer Darren Wilson and tried to take his gun and was shot in the process, but witnesses and video showed that during the altercation Brown actually ran away from police. During the chase, the officer was outrun by Brown so he began shooting at him multiple times missing wildly at the teenager. Brown stopped, turned around, and began walking back to police with his hands up showing that he was unarmed where he knelt down on the ground to give himself up following orders but, was shot in his head as well as areas in his shoulder and chest 6 times by officer Darren Wilson. Browns friend 22 year old Dorian Johnson told CNN that he and Brown were walking in the middle of the street when a white male officer pulled up and told them, “Get the f*** on the sidewalk.” The officer drove forward but stopped and backed up, almost hitting them then grabbed Brown by his neck and began chocking him. As the officer tried to grab Brown while they were in a tussle, he opened fire and shot him. Once news broke of the official story the entire city came out in support to perform peace rally’s and protest against police brutality with their hands in the air with signs chanting Hands Up, Don’t Shoot.
As the rally’s and protest began growing in numbers along with the media coverage, the police enforcement took charge and issued the riot police to shutdown the protest. The officers began shooting tear gas, flash grenades, and shooting unarmed people with rubber bullets causing all types of chaos and pandemonium in the city. The locals would not let measures shown by police stop them and began doing daily protest and marketing it on social media which, has spread the horrific tragedy into a national awareness that has had Ferguson under America’s microscope since August 9th. The widespread of the news has been the topic of discussion in many interviews causing police to make attempts to smooth over some of the anger from the people, but has shown little help as they have still issued unlawful arrest on citizens as well as shutting down peaceful protest obstructing Americans first Amendment rights. This is just the beginning of what is going to be an ongoing topic of discussion in the coming weeks as the case on Mike Brown unfolds.
