On Saturday September 27, the El Rey Theatre in LA’s Miracle Mile was the place to be as HW&W artist Kaytranada made his first major LA appearance since blowing up on the international scene. The always classy El Rey was the perfect mid-sized venue for a night of disco, bass, and trap beats. The sold out venue never felt too packed even as the crowd swelled throughout the evening.

The night began with Kay’s labelmate Kittens throwing down a massive set of bass bangers that swerved between huge trap jams and jersey club cuts. A true star in the making, Kittens displayed excellent crowd control while throwing down tracks that had an original flair (a rarity in our oversaturated culture). Joining her onstage to offer some support were fellow HW&W artists and Athletixx cohorts Falcons and Promnite. It was definitely a family affair.

Up next Soulection’s finest Sango hit the stage and delivered an incredible performance. Stepping up his stage presence Sango was all high energy as he dropped selections from North and Da Rocinha. He slid in some of the latest trap joints as well as classic hip-hop and R&B from the 90s and early 00s, effortlessly whipping the crowd into a frenzy.

With giant disco strobe lights in tow, Kaytranada took over the night. His style swayed between classic disco and R&B joints to his original music such as the funky “Leave Me Alone” featuring Shay Lia and his well know remixes for Teedra Moses and Janet Jackson. It was all love a positive vibes as Kay created a family reunion feel at the El Rey, eschewing the harder sounds for an uplifting energy. It was the perfect way to end off a night of soulful slanted bass and beats.
