We are so stoked to resurrect our Words To Live By and couldn’t be happier that we are kicking it off with one of LA’s very own, Young Chun. Showing at C.A.V.E. Gallery this November, if you get a chance you’ve got to check out his work in person. The female he portrays has that unique quality of blending various types and eras of women into a sophisticated, funky oneness that somehow really works, she’s got LA woman written all over her. Open reception is Saturday November 8th and the show goes through December 6th, and If you’re anywhere close to the fence about going, just consider this weeks Words To Live By by the man himself..

ISM: Where are you from?

I was born in Seoul Korea, but grew up in the san fernando valley.

ISM: What was it like where you grew up?

It was pretty chill. Not a whole lot to do down there, but I use to ride my skateboard up to the local guitar store to play with all the guitars on display. It was that and hanging out with friends in front of a mcdonalds parking lot.

ISM: Earliest experience with art?

When I was like 3 or 4, I started to draw pictures of unicorns and dragons. I suppose it gave me something to do to pass the time, but I found enjoyment in drawing these pictures as well.

ISM: Someone/something that inspired you?

I’m inspired by many things, but especially music. I think it allows me to connect with my feelings, and those feelings develop into images in my mind that I paint.

ISM: Favorite medium to work with.

Oils are the medium of choice for me. Growing up as a pastors kid, I remember visiting homes of some prominent people who attended the church. Their lavish homes were beautifully decorated with original oil paintings. It left a lasting impression on me. As a kid I associated oil paintings not only with beauty, but also with prominence and success. There’s just something about oil paints that I really like. Maybe it’s that type of caliber it allows me to achieve in my work, or the feel of it on my brush as I spread it like butter on the canvas. I just like everything about oils.

ISM: Background music when working, TV, silence, or all/none of the above?

I usually work with the radio on. Complete silence will drive me nuts.

ISM: Something you are looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to my exhibition coming up this November, at C.A.V.E gallery. I worked really hard on these paintings. So I hope people will drop by to support me, and say hi.

ISM:Something you can’t live without?

I can’t live without music. It keeps me going throughout the day. Music also helps me to be more creative. So I admire musicians that make good music.

ISM: Somewhere you can’t wait to visit?

I’d like the visit Italy some day to see the works of Michelangelo in person.

ISM: Somewhere you love to be?

I love hanging out at the studio. I think I find it to be a comforting place for my mind and soul.

ISM: Future goals?

Just to grow as an artist and human being.

ISM: Words to live by?

Just do it! – nike.
