Saturday May 9th, the 2nd Annual BLOCK PARTY LA took over the entire block of 3200 Union Pacific Avenue in downtown LA. Block Party LA is a concert series that gives independent artist a platform to be exposed and share the stage with bigger names in the music game. This years line up included Talib Kweli, OverDoz, Curtiss King, Dean Risko, Alex Isley, Ramaj Eroc, The League, NameBrand, Jake&Papa, Craig Gillespie, Tassnata + Junia-T, Rook and Ab Soul stopped by and gave fans a surprise performance!
Ashley Glaspie, founder of Block Party LA, wanted concert goers to enjoy a great time, but she also wanted people to walk away inspired to give back and help their community. The event not only included live performances but also included a Words of Encouragement booth hosted by HashtagLunchbag, a pop up shop hosted by The Originators, a mobile thrift store called the Popsikle shop, food trucks, an art display, and much more.
“My goal with Block Party LA is to give independent artists a solid foundation and space where they have the opportunity to leave a legacy.’” says Glaspie. “I was raised to give back and with that instilled in me combined with my love for music. Block Party LA has become my way of giving back to the community and helping my generation to feel empowered to chase their dreams.”
A portion of the proceeds raised during Block Party LA 2015 will be donated to the Children’s Defense Fund scholarship program “Beat the Odds”. With the mission of not leaving one child behind, the Children’s Defense Fund, ensures that every child has a healthy start, head start, a fair start and a moral start in life leading to a successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities.
