Curren$y drops his single “Good Cop, Bad Cop” hitting home about the continuous and explosive tension between police and minority groups. The New Orleans rapper uses the instrumental from Erykah Badu’s, The Other Side of the Game, to speak on the controversial, yet pivotal social matter. Curren$y uses a line from the original song “What you gonna do when they come for you?” and it clear that it is a line that holds an enormous amount of significance. Many African Americans, including the Jet Life rapper himself, are now fearing that they could possibly become the next hashtag streaming across social media. Throughout the song, Curren$y expresses these thoughts. You can hear the frustration, hurt, anger and pain burning within him. You can hear the questions rambling within his brain and it is clear that these recent incidents have truly touched him. Curren$y cleverly uses his platform to express his own feelings on the back to back killings of African Americans by police officers. He acknowledges the fact that their are indeed both good cops and bad cops, yet he still has to watch his back. “Good Cop, Bad Cop” certainly shows the versatility of the ‘Pilot Talk’ music artist. This song reveals that Curren$y is able to connect with listeners not only their shared love for Mary Jane, but on social matters as well.
