Hanging around Melrose’s Round Two Hollywood and Fairfax district, I first learned about OFF-White, as I curiously inquired about the
shirts with those famous caution lines that represent the brand. Defined as a lifestyle brand, designer Virgil Abloh finds inspiration or Off-White in everyday industrial life, bringing high fashion to the streets, or alternatively, bringing the streets to high fashion. His Men’s FW16 collection not only showcases Abloh’s industrial influence, but by utilizing female models to fashion the men’s pieces as well, he exemplifies the OFF-White ideology:
“Defining the grey area between black and white as Off-White.”
Contemporary life really is not just black and white anymore. It is more of an off-white, a stand alone category, something that is comfortable with broken boundaries and is completely out of the norm. Abloh’s choice to create androgynous pieces demonstrates the brand’s concept that it does not serve one person – it is about a middle ground. It is about finding balance in the essence of streetwear and
sophisticated high fashion.
His newest photo circulating the internet features rapper, 21 Savage, showcasing more of Abloh’s pieces, and exemplifying Abloh’s fondness of industrial and street influences, as 21 Savage, one of the most popping street rappers of 2016, is shown modeling in front of street cones.
Undoubtedly, Abloh is changing the game by pushing the boundaries of the fashion world. He has cut off the caution tape that otherwise separated the worlds of street life and high fashion, trespasses against the norms of the fashion world, and industrializes it with his contemporary and visionary brand, Off White.
