Since his tape “Northern Lights” came out, everytime I hear Allan Kingdom’s “The Ride”, I can’t help but think of one of my favorite myths, Icarus & Deadalus. If you’re not familiar with the myth, Daedalus, the artisan, makes wings for he and his son, Icarus, and he warns him not to fly too high cuz the sun will melt the wax off the wings. Well, Icarus, a bold and adventurous boy, fails to listen to his dad and flies too high, melting the wax off his wings and plunging into the sea below. As tragic as this myth might sound though, I think the message that exists in both this and Kingdom’s track “The Ride”, is that one should never be afraid of flying high, of dreaming big and taking risks, while staying true to your nature.
In his new video, Allan kingdom teams up with director Ben Hughes to take us on a beautiful and cinematic ride of dream chasing and self awareness. He drives around in a red Porché and mounts a hot air balloon, flying high into the sky and taking us “high as ever” while reminding us that no matter what you do, it is important to “stay you, but change too.” Unlike Icarus, no one has warned Allan to fly low and I think with the series of accomplishments he’s achieved so far, along with his persistence and artistic originality, Allan won’t face the same fate as Icarus. Alternatively, I anticipate that Allan is going to continue to climb and reach extraordinary heights in his career.
