Red Bull Sound Select hosted night 20 of 30 Days in LA, longtime curator AFROPUNK took over The MacArthur for their first time ever edition of Fancy Dress Ball in Los Angeles on November 20th. This Red Bull Sound Select was a bit different from the others. Rooted in carnival traditions of the African Diaspora, the AFROPUNK Fancy Dress Ball was a mash-up of masquerade ball and J’ouvert atmosphere that celebrates the AFROPUNK culture by asking attendees to dress their best in any way they want to express themselves. The event showed a true combination of acceptance, cool fashion, and great musical performances.
The event was filled with an eclectic artist lineup which matched the crowd perfectly. Opening the night was Byrell the Great, MikeQ, UNIIQU3, LSDXOXO, HO99O9. Red Bull Sound Select artist Cakes Da Killa, who has been hailed for his talent and subsequent elevation of queer visibility in hip hop closed out the night along with headliner, Big Freedia, the Queen of Bounce. Big Freedia was joined on stage by Beyonce’s Lead Dance Captain Ashley Everett. The event also featured a pop-up photo shoot area, on demand body art artists and a bar fully stocked with Red Bull specialty drinks. The Fancy Dress Ball was a nice addition to the Red Bull Sound Select and we are definitely looking forward to more AFROPUNK events on the West Coast!
