We’re finally getting back to our daily grind from last weekend’s Outside Lands Festival, which took place from August 9th-11th at the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, CA. The 3-day music festival was stacked with an eclectic lineup that featured world-class acts, art, food, and a cannabis beverage by Lagunitas Hi-Fi Hops.
Day 1 started off a bit slower than Day 2 and Day 3 maybe due to the overcast weather but we enjoyed watching the goat Lil Wayne, P-Lo, Flying Lotus, and Yaeji sets. Childish Gambino & Anderson Paak’s performance for both Day 2 and Day 3 were hands down one of my favorite sets. Childish Gambino and Anderson Paak both had the area fully packed!! It was incredible. I believe it was 10x more people than last year’s event according to the news.
Childish Gambino surprised everyone by performing on the opposite side of the stage, which brought out a different element to his performance. It almost felt like it was his own concert as if it wasn’t part of Outside Lands. It was theatrical, to say the least. The camera guy was following him as he walked down the walkway in the middle of the festival. It felt like we were part of his music video or movie. It definitely gave me the vibes from his recent short film “Guava Island.” Usually artists’ stay on stage, but he was out and about, taking pictures and interacting with fans. The energy was super lit! He also had a live choir for some of his songs. The stage lighting was spot on and he also had fireworks during his performance which is why I say that his performance was a moooovie!
Santigold, Ella Mai, and Tierra Whack performance were also dope! Santigold had fans come up on stage to vibe out and dance while she performed. The UK R&B singer Ella Mai had everyone in their feels singing along to her hit “Boo’d Up.”
Anderson Paak’s performance featuring his band The Free National’s for Day 3 had the crowd giggin’. Everyone was singing and dancing to his music. Anderson Paak and a live band? Man, you’ll have the crowd feeling some type of way for sure! The energy that evening was really great, people knew the lyrics, you could tell everyone was having a good time. He played all my favorites, such as “Make it better” ft. Smokey Robinson, “King James”, and “Come Down”. His stage presence was divine! He was gigging so hard, you could tell he was in such a great mood! Denzel Curry, Sheck Wes, Leven Kali, and Toro y Moi did their thang too! We had a good time covering the festival. Shouts out to Outside Lands for having us, we look forward to seeing next years line up.
